Yakko Tickles the Ivories ...and the Funny Bones

First of all, my apologies for not updating my blog as often as I used to. Real life kept me busy. ...as well as surfin' the web, playin' video games, watchin' TV, etc. Now, for the first post of the new year:

Following up on my previous post on "Animaniacs", I want to highlight my favorite trait of my second ever cartoon crush, Yakko Warner. (Image found on a Google search.) As those of you who've seen the show know, he's named "Yakko" because he's able to talk a lot without missing a beat (thanks to his voice actor, Rob Paulsen). But what I like best about him is that he's able to sing and sing well. ("Yakko's World" is positive poof pf that. Rob still performs that song live.) Yakko's also a talented musician as seen in various "Animaniacs" episodes. He can play just about every musical instrument in the northern hemisphere. (At least, as far as we've seen.) But there is one instrument I always think of to associate with Yakko: The piano!

He has been seen playing the piano to accompany his brother, Wakko, during "The Great Wakkorotti" segments and his sister, Dot, while she's singing to Beethoven in "Roll Over, Beethoven" (the "Animaniacs" cartoon, not the Beatles song). However, of all the times I've seen Yakko at the piano during "Animaniacs" run (it was 99 episodes long, by the way), I've never seen him singing as he plays the piano. Yakko is a talented singer and musician and the piano is one of the few musical instruments to allow the player to play and sing at the same time. Because of this, I've had to imagine Yakko singing while playing piano whenever listen to certain songs on my iPod such as Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" or Jamiroquai's "Virtual Insanity". (Yes, I want to hear Yakko sing this, it suits him, being an "Animaniac" and all.)

There were times he came close to singing while playing the piano. The first instance was by the end of "Piano Rag" when he and his siblings were playing the piano and singing... well, Yakko was at the piano singing a verse, but Wakko and Dot seemed to be doing all the piano playing, both singing a respective verse while playing. Dang. What a wasted opportunity for Yakko.

The second time he almost sang while playing the piano, almost being the key word here, was in "Hercule Yakko". Here, Yakko was a detective called Hercule Yakko (in case you didn't know by the cartoon's title), trying to figure out who stole Marita Hippo's diamond. (Marita and her husband, Flabio, a.k.a. the Hip Hippos, were among the cast of "Animaniacs".) He asks Flabio and Marita if they had any enemies to which they said no. Yakko then asks if they had any creditors and they said no to this, too. Then, as part of the gag, Yakko, dressed as a lounge singer (Wayne Newton, I assume) and at the piano, asks if they had any requests. At first, he seems to be playing the piano, but when he picks up takes the microphone and sings "Down Upon The Nile River" (a parody of "Swany River"), the hand he does have free (since he's holding the mic with one hand) doesn't touch the piano keys (as seen in the screenshot, captured by me), although piano music is heard as he sings, so, it counts as the cartoon's musical score.

(Screenshot by me.) The last time Yakko's officially seen playing the piano was in the last episode of "Animaniacs", in the cartoon "The Scoring Session". The whole "Animaniacs" cast is the studio's orchestra to score a cartoon while being conducted by guest conductor, a rhino named Neivel Nosenest. (Tee hee, "Nosenest".) During the session, Wakko bangs on a gong which makes Neivel scold him. Neivel proceeds to tell Wakko that the score says "piano" since piano means "soft". So, Neivel says to play piano and this prompts Yakko to play the piano as part of the joke (since the instrument is commonly called a piano which is short for pianoforte). It would've been cool to see Yakko sing while playing the piano (preferably Irving Berlin's "I Love A Piano"), but just seeing him play instrumental jazz on the piano works well. You can see the cartoon on Youtube (courtesy of MrWarners14) even though it's a Russian dub, but it'll do 'til the WB releases episodes 76-99 on DVD as "Animaniacs Volume 4".

Rob Paulsen mentioned in episode 20 of his podcast that he doesn't play a musical instrument himself (so much for seeing him accompanying himself on the piano while singing "Yakko's World" among other songs), but it doesn't hinder Yakko's musical abilities any. Still, since "Animaniacs" is no longer on the air (and with no new episodes), it's a shame we'll never get to see Yakko singing while playing the piano, but it does open up that possibility since he does both so well. But at least I still can imagine Yakko singing while playing the piano. Here's a list of songs I'd like to see Yakko sing while playing piano (in no particular order):

Feelin' "Zany to the Max"

Sorry I haven't been updating this blog very often, I was busy surfin' the web. I figure now would be a good time to post my latest thoughts.

It seems I've finally got off my Disney kick for a while now. The reason? A show I was obsessed with since 1993 called... wait for it... "Animaniacs"!

Yes, that show. And get this: it's from the same studio that brought us the "Looney Tunes" cartoons, namely, Warner Bros. It stars Yakko, Wakko, and Dot - the Warner Brothers (not the studio this time) and the Warner Sister - among others, but the siblings are my favorites (with Yakko being my most favorite... and second cartoon crush). Back then, I didn't live in Portland, Oregon. As such, I didn't have the WB (long before it became the CW) once "Animaniacs" moved there from FOX in 1995. I made do, of course, recording the episodes before the network switch and whenever I visited relatives who had the WB and Cartoon Network (when the show aired in reruns there). I was even lucky to get the direct to video movie "Wakko's Wish" (VHS only) for Christmas of 1999!

Time passed and now, I've got the first three volumes of the show on DVD as well as all three volumes of its spinoff "Pinky & the Brain" featuring the two titular lab mice who plan every night to try to take over the world! I'm still waiting for the WB studio to release volume four of "Animaniacs" (which includes the final episodes) and "Wakko's Wish" on DVD. Come on, guys, we're not gettin' any younger here! However, Tom Ruegger has a blog which you can visit and comment on called "Cartoonatics". And Rob Paulsen, who voices Yakko and Pinky, has a website of his own and a twitter account just to see what he's been up to. (He's been a very busy voice actor.)

Might as well end this post with this article from "Entertainment Weekly". Looks like I'm not the only one nostalgic for the show. On that note, allow me to quote Yakko by saying: "Goodnight, everybody!"

Not Fair for the Fair

I was in WDW for my birthday (Feb. 16th) and thus, was there on that last night that Mickey's Toontown Fair was open (Feb. 11th). Not much happened to commemorate the event for us guests, but I did see some cast members dancing with some guests joining in at the County Bounty store. I took some pics of some of the buildings and got a chance to ride the Barnstormer with my mom one last time (before it becomes "The Great Goofini"). Although there's still a Toontown in Disneyland U.S.A. and Tokyo Disneyland, and Mickey and Minnie have got new meet and greet spots in Tomorrowland, Frontierland, and the Hall of Presidents at Liberty Square (mostly Mickey on his own here) before Exhibition Hall is ready for them, I feel there will never be another Toontown experience in WDW for a while. There was a ceremony for the cast members on the last night which you can see here on YouTube. (Courtesy of crushinator.) So, for my first blog post of the year, I'd like to dedicate this moment to what will become the Storybook Circus. Toontown Fair, you will be missed. Happy Decemberween! ...finally!

After waiting half a year, Homestar Runner's website has finally updated! For reals this time and not just for the online store. If you've been following the site as I have, you'll notice there's a new 'toon up, just in time for Decemberween (Free Country USA's version of Christmas)! On top of that Telltale Games released "Poker Night at the Inventory" earlier last month which, as you know, features Strong Bad as one of the card sharks you'll be playing against. (I mentioned the game on my Labor Day post here.)

While on the subject of Holiday cheer, check out the December Fan Favorite 'toon on FredtheMonkey.com: "Santa Sceb is Coming to Town"! I'm not the only one who voted for this 'toon and it still shines as bright as a star on top of a Christmas tree. (You'll see my name, Marci Cameron, and comment on the page. Bonus props to JKR for including that.) In this 'toon, Sceb (short for Space Chicken's Evil Brother) attempts to cage St. Nick himself so that he can give Sceb what he wants: A red and black DS lite, a new PC, world domination (of course), and a "My Little Pony" playset, which seems too sugary sweet for Sceb and he tries to hide that by claiming that Pip (the sickly blue space chicken) wanted that. Will Sceb succeed in his plan to capture the jolly old elf? See for yourself and find out.

I've been busy with Halloween and Thanksgiving to post up to now, I have a real life, too, you know. I'll also be plenty busy with Christmas coming up, so, there may not be many posts on this blog after this one, just to give you a heads up. So, in case I don't post any more this year, I wish all of you who read this blog (if anyone is reading this): Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

7 Years of the Monkey

If you haven't caught the reference in this post's title, then, you haven't been to FredtheMonkey.com. It's been seven years since this fun little website launched and now, the entire site just got a facelift. It's not that this hasn't happened before as seen in the "3, 2, 1... RELAUNCH!" parts 1, 2, and 4 (note that part 3 is missing) in addition to this brief 'toon before part 4, "Closed for Repairs", but this recent upgrade has got me excited. How about you? In fact, I just updated my previous post on the site so that future readers don't go to dead links. I even saw the 'toon to mark the seventh anniversary of the site and both Fred and S.C. have never looked better! But don't take my word for it, go see the site for yourself!

The Golden Stone Age Family

Thank you, Google, for reminding me of an important cartoon occasion: The 50th anniversary of the Flintstones TV show!

The Flintstones and their neighbors, the Rubbles, brought their modern Stone Age lives onto our TV screens on this day in 1960. The late William Hanna said that "The Honeymooners" was the concept for TV's first ever prime time animated series. And cartoon voice legends Alan Reed and Mel Blanc (most famous as the voice of most of the male Looney Tunes like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig) voiced Fred and Barney, respectfully. And here's an article from Cartoon Brew, marking the occasion. 50 years and looking fabulous! Now, that's a modern Stone Age turned Golden Age!

You're Invited... Again

Last year, Tokyo DisneySea held their first ever Halloween theme, a Masquerade party, if you will. (I even remarked on the event as seen here.) And guess what? They're doing it again! Yay! Though I can't be there myself (since my mom and/or I couldn't afford to go to Japan which was the case last year, too), I'm so glad TDS decided to bring back this fun Halloween theme. This year, they added a Mexican Fiesta hosted by Chip, Dale, and Clarice, the chipmunk singer who caught Chip and Dale's eye in the classic cartoon "Two Chips and a Miss".

The "MOUSEquerade" is back and Daisy joins the fun this year. (Last year, it was just Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Chip, and Dale.) And another thing you'll notice is that the main gang are wearing masks throughout the entire dance. Other than that, it's pretty much the same as last year.

...so is the "Mysterious Masquerade" stage show at the Tower of Terror. Most of the show is left unchanged, but at the happy ending, the whole gang has masks on instead of just Mickey. I once explained my vision of the show should it be brought to the U.S., however, there's another version reeling in my head. It goes like this: Most of the cast is the same, but I've also included Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow, and the aforementioned Clarice. Like in my original vision, Goofy doesn't turn into an evil pirate and Minnie doesn't become a possessed Egyptian queen. Instead, Horace is the pirate and Clarabelle is the Egyptian queen. This leaves Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy left to save the day by getting eveyone to dance with them, even the unsure Clarice. Vidia, the fast-flying fairy rival of Tinker Bell, would teach the audience the dance. Another variation has Goofy's son, Max, in Clarice's place. What do you think of my recent idea?

Todaybor Day is a Labor Day!

...and Strong Bad won't be checking emails on this day (as seen in sbemail #83). Homestar leads his "Homestarmy" makes sure nobody or their brother does any work at all today (as he reminds The Cheat, seen here). While the main site itself is still non-updated, you can still peruse the site for past cartoons to watch again (unless you're watching some of them for the first time). Doesn't mean Strong Bad's not active though: Earlier this month, Telltale Games annouced "Poker Night at the Inventory" which has Strong Bad playing, obviously, poker with Tycho from the "Penny Arcade" webcomic, Max (the rabbit) from "Sam & Max: Freelance Pollice", and the Heavy from the video game "Team Fortress 2". Telltale has worked with Strong Bad before to create the ever popular, super fun "Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People" (or, if you wanna get in on the ground floor of abbriviations, SBCG4AP), but hey, I'm just psyched Strong Bad's still around. How about you? Are you excited about this game as I am? Hopefully, this will be a sign that the Homestar Runner website will be updated soon. Please, oh, please, oh, please!

Still Cool for Five Years

A Monkey Helps Me Cope

While waiting for updates to the Homestar Runner website, I figured I might as well watch the cartoons on another website: FredtheMonkey.com. Created by JKR (yeah, that's his name), this site has fun cartoons featuring Fred the Monkey (of course), Space Chicken (mostly known as S.C.), and Sceb (short for Space Chicken's Evil Brother), among others. I even watch the mailbags which has Sceb answering E-Mails from viewers (usually against his will). It resembles sbemails (Strong Bad Emails), but unlike Strong Bad, Sceb talks directly to the viewers instead of typing a response. And some of the cartoons feature music videos by and starring JKR revolving around video games. The most recent one is about E3 2010. But this site also has comics. Those are funny, too. Although the cartoons aren't updated on that site either, JKR does have a blog there that is updated as a way of letting us know he's still around. So, give FredtheMonkey.com a look-see for yourself. At least until Homestar Runner's website is updated. ...eventually.

Belated Birthday Greetings

Man! Have I been neglecting toons' birthdays or what? It's not that I forgot their b-days, it's just that I never bothered to post them on the blog here. So, to make up for it, I'm listing all the birthdays I missed these past couple of months.

June 9, 2010: Donald Duck turns 76 this day. Not as big as his 75th last year, but Disney didn't make that big a deal about it then either. Sorry I took so long to mention it, Donald, but please, don't be too angry with me about it. ...again. (See my posts on his 74th and 75th.)

June 23, 2010: Sonic the Hedgehog keeps running in his 19th year in existence. I neglected his birthday last year, but this year, I'm really a heal with Sega of America's contest in honor of Sonic's 19th b-day which offered a trip to Sega of Japan as the grand prize. Needless to say that Needlemouse: the Musical (courtesy of FierceDeityYS) won for the U.S. while Blue Sky Dreams (courtesy of Purplespikeyjoe) got the grand prize on the U.K. side of the world. I wouldv'e entered, but didn't because 1. I don't have a YouTube account and 2. even if I did, I missed the deadline to enter. I did like Needlemouse: the Musical though. I even downloaded the mp3 provided in the vid's description. Congrats, guys! You deserve it. (See my post on Sonic's 17th birthday here.)

July 27, 2010: Bugs Bunny reaches the big 7-0 on this day. However, I spent the day celebrating my mom's birthday since she shares the day with Bugs although she was born years later. That, and it's kinda hard to celebrate the wabbit's milestone knowing that soon, Cartoon Network would be showing this. (Courtesy of Cartoon Brew.) Man! That pic is hard to digest. And don't get me started on that promo vid. (Another link from Cartoon Brew.) Yikes! Hearing Daffy's voice makes me upset that Joe Alaskey isn't doing the voice for this series. And seeing what the characters look like in motion... Forget it! I prefer my Looney Tunes looking classic like they did in the late 90's-early 2000's, thank you very much. (See my posts on Bugs' 68th birthday and belated 69th.)

That's pretty much all the birthdays I forgot to post. Mostly because I'm lazy. Sorry 'bout that. Hope I can be able to overcome my laziness and post the birthdays for next year as they come up.

Sweet Soundsation

The Disney Parks Blog just announced that a new parade is coming to Disneyland USA next year. It's called "Mickey's Soundsational Parade"!

I've seen the concept art they posted (displayed above) and I couldn't be more excited. Floats based on "The Little Mermaid", "Aladdin", "The Princess and the Frog", and the upcoming "Tangled" featuring Rapunzel? You know I can hardly wait. 2011 can't come soon enough! More info here.

UPDATE 2/26/11: The Disney Parks Blog gave an opening date for "Mickey's Soundsational Parade" - May 27th! Proof is here along with the opening dates for Ariel's Undersea Adventure at DCA and Star Tours at Disneyland U.S.A. Mark your calendars because it won't be long before the streets of Main Street U.S.A. start sounding like music to your ears... and eyes!

Homestar Runs Low on Updates

Everyone loves the Homestar Runner. He is a terrific athlete. But since April 12th of this year, he's not good keeping his website up to date. The last update the site has seen was of a new main page based on Xeriouxly Forxe, an April Fools toon that appeared earlier in the month. And I'm getting worried. June is almost over and there's still no new updates. I need my fix of Homestar, Strong Bad, The Cheat, and the rest. I'd wouldn't even mind seeing Homsar at this point. Anything to let me know the cast is not dead. I so hope The Cheat (and everybody else) are not dead. (Bonus points if you've guessed the references I put in this post.)

UPDATE 7/7/10: According to this post on the forum of the Homestar Runner Wikipedia, one of the moderators contacted the creators of the Homestar Runner website (Matt and Mike Chapman) and the brothers said Homestar isn't ending, not even without adding Level 10 to the Stinkoman game. That's good news at least. Now, all we have to do is wait until they update. ...however long that may be. While waiting for that to happen, members at the Homestar Wiki forum are planning a fan flash explaining the hiatis. Even if you're not a member of the forum, you're welcome to sign up for this collaboration at Google groups. Just go here to either join in or see the progress.

A Goof of My Own

Man! End of the month already and I forgot to post about Goofy's birthday almost a week ago. Sorry, Goofy, I guess I was too busy surfin' the web to post the occasion, but that doesn't mean I didn't forget your birthday entirely. Mickey Speaks! (at Disneyland)

There are a couple of videos posted on YouTube that I found simply amazing. Both courtesy of lrharrisjr, they feature Mickey Mouse at a meet and greet at his house in Disneyland USA, but get this: Mickey is actually talking! Yes, you read right, Mickey actually talks! I haven't been to Disneyland recently, but I've seen the vids and I'm still in awe! The first video has Mickey welcoming everyone and inviting them to have their picture taken with him as seen here. In the second video, Mickey talks to a little girl and her aunt and calls them by name here. That's right, he says their names. Proof positive that the audio of Mickey talking wasn't prerecorded. Can you say "wow"? According to lrharrisjr (who, as I mentioned, posted these videos), this is a test run by Disney, but I wouldn't mind if they made this feature permament, not just in Disneyland, but in Walt Disney World, too. And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, they'll do the same for Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and maybe even Goofy. (Please, please, please, Disney, do Goofy next!) Let's hope Disney can make this happen.

Disney Goes Steampunk

I never imagined this could happen. And you know what? I love it! The Disney Parks Blog has announced the arrival of the new pin set called "The Mechanical Kingdom", slated to be released this April. The pin set features Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, Pete, and Professor Ludwig von Drake in steampunk outfits.(Above pic from the Disney Parks Blog.)

So, what is steampunk, you ask? Well, basically, it's a fictional universe where modern technology exists in the Victorian era, a.k.a., the 19th century. I'm not into steampunk myself, but it does look good on Mickey and the gang, especially Goofy. I wish this pin set came out while I was in Walt Disney World a few weeks ago, I'm not planning a return visit so soon just for the release of these pins. But don't let me stop you, you can get the pins yourself, although only Mickey and Pete are included in the pin set only while Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Ludwig von Drake can be purchased separately. Better hurry though, they're limited edition, which means that they won't be sold at the parks for long.

Part of Our World for Two Decades!

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the theatrical release of Disney's "The Little Mermaid", the movie that introduced the world to the world's most beloved mermaid-turned-human, Ariel! She currently is number one on my top five Disney Princesses list. Only problem is I don't know whether to celebrate the occasion as Ariel's 20th birthday or her and Eric's 20th wedding anniversary since they got married at the end of the film. Anyway, if you have a VHS or DVD of the movie, today would be a good time to watch it in honor of the occasion.

Homestar Halloween

If you've ever been to the Homestar Runner website often like I've been doing, then, you'll know they have a cartoon for Halloween every year. This year, the theme is "Doomy Tales of the Macabre". In it, Strong Sad, the youngest and least self-esteemed of the Brothers Strong, shows a little back bone and writes a "Death Note" like book, exacting his revenge against all his friends in Free Country, U.S.A. since none of them bothered to invite him to their Halloween parties this year. My favorite part is where Strong Sad writes about his older brother, Strong Bad, having human hands instead of his usual boxing gloves. It made me laugh seeing S.B. trying to type on his computer with real hands. Real hands! But don't take my word for it, go over to the site and give it a look for yourselves. Happy Halloween!

Paper Faces on Parade at Disney

Since its opening, Tokyo DisneySea never celebrated Halloween like Tokyo Disneyland did. ...until now. This year, TDS is holding a park-wide Halloween celebration with masquerades as its theme.

Mickey and Minnie are already getting into the spirit. (No pun intended.)

For starters, they've got an elaborate stage show in front of the Tower of Terror called "Mysterious Masquerade". I've seen videos of it posted this past week on YouTube already through a search of "Mysterious Masquerade" and I don't even have to know Japanese to know what's going on. It got me thinking about wanting to bring it to the states with a slight variation: Stitch (yes, the Stitch from "Lilo and Stitch") and Angel take the place of Donald and Daisy, Timon (of "The Lion King") would fill in for both Chip and Dale, Tigger (one of Winnie the Pooh's friends) would be the one hypnotized into being the pirate captain instead of Goofy so that the Goof could be the hero in Mickey's place, and Tinker Bell would be the hostess and after a failed attempt to save Stitch, Angel, Tigger, and Timon with Pixie Dust, Tink would become the Egyptian Queen instead of Minnie. The songs are already in English, so, all that remains is adding English dialogue since not everyone in the U.S. speaks Japanese, myself included.

Another fun Halloween show at TDS is the "MOUSEquerade", a greeting show where "Meet & Smile" is usually held. It's a fun little show that, again, you don't need to know Japanese to enjoy it. My Top 5 Disney Princesses

I'm super excited to get Disney's newest animated film, "The Princess and the Frog", on DVD. Even before the movie hit theaters, I got hooked on its heroine, Tiana, the first African-American Disney Princess.

Yes, I like the Disney Princesses. After all, I am a girl, duh! But even I have my favorite princess. Actually, I have more than one fave. So, in true radio DJ fashion, I'm posting a top five list of my most favorite Disney Princesses. They are as follows:

5. Aurora from Sleeping Beauty
4. Cinderella, the title character
3. Belle from Beauty and the Beast
2. Tiana from The Princess and the Frog

And my number one favorite Disney Princess is...

Ariel from The Little Mermaid (What can I say, I have a thing for mermaids.)

Jasmine from Disney's "Aladdin" was at the number five spot, but after seeing "The Princess and the Frog" in theaters (and twice, I might add), Tiana shot up to number two, bumping Jasmine off my top five list. (Sorry, Jasmine. I still like you though.) In any case, Ariel will always remain my number one favorite Disney Princess. If you've ever seen "The Little Mermaid", you'll know why I like her the most. But all the Disney Princesses are great in their own way. Let's face it, Princesses rock!

UPDATE 1/20/10: The official Disney Parks blog is asking readers who their favorite Disney Princess is. I'd tell them my fave, but I'm not a member of the blog. It's still worth a read, go see.

Just Who Was Bugs Bunny's Dad Anyway?

First off, I want to apologize to Bugs Bunny about not noting his birthday on July 27th like I did last year. I was busy with real life. (My mom shares her birthday with Bugs which is part of the reason.) Lame excuse, I know, but still, I bet you don't spend all your time online either.

Now that I got that off my chest, I'd like to address something I've come across while looking at the updates on Cartoon Brew. It seems that Martha Sigall, the last survivor of Termite Terrace, had just posted a video on YouTube about the history of the creation of Bugs Bunny. (She even mentioned Daffy Duck's popularity near the end of the vid.) See it here through Cartoon Brew. Although Ben "Bugs" Hardaway (Did I spell his last name right?) created a Daffy-esque bunny for 1938's "Porky's Hare Hunt" (in which, the bunny would first tell Porky the famous Groucho Marx line "Of course, you realize that this means WAR." years before the wabbit himself would often declare that as his revenge vow to his adversaries in the Chuck Jones directed shorts) and his name was on the bunny's model sheet (shown as "Bugs' Bunny" which led to our wascally wabbit's given name), it was Tex Avery's 1940 cartoon "A Wild Hare" who gave the rabbit his personality, not to mention the iconic catchphrase "Eh, what's up, doc?" which would kick start the everlasting career of the hare we came to know as Bugs Bunny. Ain't he a celebrity?

So, here's to Bugs Bunny, no matter who created him first. And maybe next year on his 70th birthday, I'll post something really memorable. ...as soon as I get enough resources.

MY E-MAIL'S BEEN SCREWED!

Off-topic, but very serious. My E-Mail problems have passed, but I'm keeping this post up to warn those who use Hotmail.

When I first started this blog, I had a Hotmail account for my E-Mail. Now, I'm afraid it's being abused. It started when I got this message saying that they need my username and my password or they'll shut down my account. I fell for it like Elmer Fudd fell for Bugs Bunny in drag. Suddenly, my family and other contacts are getting an E-Mail from somebody else under my E-Mail address asking for money! I am so screwed! So, if you have a Hotmail account and you get an E-Mail that threatens to shut down said account, DON'T RESPOND! Do not go through what I went through! Because of all this, I've now gotten a new E-Mail account with G-Mail. I learned from my mistake and hopefully, this will never happen to me again. I hope, I hope, I hope!

The Thriller is Gone

Sorry I didn't post this sooner, but it is sad news. I'm still bummin' over this. You already know this, but I just had to post that Michael Jackson, the King of Pop, had died on June 24th of this year. So, why would I post this at all if it's all over the news? Well, I liked M.J.'s songs. From his days in the Jackson 5 to that iconic Moonwalk, he kept me groovin' to his hits for a long time. It's a shame that he had to go out in this way. I'll truly miss him.

Score Another Milestone for Donald Duck!

Donald Duck, Disney's temperamental water fowl, celebrates his 75th birthday today! D23, the official site for Disney fans, marks the occasion. So does the Today in Disney History blog since this is the day he debuted in the Silly Symphony "The Wise Little Hen" as they kindly pointed out here. Even Blue Sky Disney honors the milestone in the duck's history. There's even an article online about a man who came to Disneyland to celebrate his 75th birthday on the same day as Donald's! Read all about it here. And in case you missed it, here's my post on the duck's birthday last year with as many links I could find at the time. I'm sure you'll want to search YouTube for "The Wise Little Hen" to watch the cartoon to celebrate. After all, it's always nice to see where the Disney duck got his start. Happy Birthday, Donald!

Mickey Mouse Loses His Voice

It wasn't until recently I learned the sad, sad news. It appears that Wayne Allwine, who voiced Mickey Mouse since 1983's "Mickey's Christmas Carol", passed away a couple days ago (May 18th, 2009). Goofy's big day is almost here, on May 25th to be exact, but some people, like the folks who maintain the WDWHistory YouTube channel are celebrating early on the 12th which is today. Here's their video that commemorates it. I'm preparing a fanfic for Goofy to honor him, but it probably won't be posted by his birthday. My First Blogiversary

Today marks the day when one year ago, I started this blog. Check out my first entry here. One year later and still not many comments. Come on, guys! Get with it! Share your opinions with me! Choose one of my post and leave a comment already! Oh, well. Even with the drought of comments, I still have plenty of stuff I'm thinking of blogging about in the near future. Hopefully then, I can get more comments on here. Keep in mind though, I won't post often as I'm just flat-out lazy, but that doesn't mean I won't surf the web for flickr pics and YouTube videos. ...mostly for Disney stuff, like Goofy (the cartoon character, not the verb). And Sailor Moon. I've redeveloped a passion for Sailor Moon recently. About three years ago I started watching the Sailor Moon musicals in Japan (known by fans as Sera Myu) on YouTube, thanks to Curiosayh and sailorwarsupreme. But I'll ramble about that in a future post. For now, leave a comment. On any of my posts. Sometime this decade would be nice. Please?

Dream Disney Remakes

Honor Hunter over at Blue Sky Disney posted about what movies he'd like to see Disney remake. That got me thinking about what I want to see Disney remake. I already commented in said post, but here's what movies I'd like to see from Disney.

1. Xanadu
This has been on mind quite a while since I saw Disney's "Hercules". I'm a fan of Xanadu (the movie with Olivia Newton-John, not the Broadway show) and figured "Why not use the muses from 'Hercules' in this film?" As for casting the leads, I'd pick Monique Coleman from "High School Musical" as Kira/Terpsichore, Orlando Brown from "That's So Raven" as Sonny Malone, and Nathan Lane as Danny McGuire. (I like "High School Musical" even though I'm an adult. ...still living with my mother.)

2. Babes in Toyland
I recently got the idea of Mickey Mouse and his friends in this remake of Walt Disney's musical. Here's the cast list:
Mickey Mouse as Tom, the Piper's Son
Minnie Mouse as Mary, Quite Contrary
Donald Duck as Jack Be Nimble
Daisy Duck as Little Bo Peep (she dresses as Bo Peep in some episodes of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse")
Goofy as Simple Simon
Huey, Dewey, and Louie (Donald's nephews) as Wynken, Blynken, and Nod
Pete (Mickey's nemesis) as Barnaby, the Crooked Man (or should I say, Crooked Cat)
Scrooge McDuck (Donald's rich uncle from Duckburg) as the Toy Maker
Ludwig von Drake as Grumio, the Toy Maker's assistant
J. Worthingthon Foulfellow (from Walt Disney's "Pinocchio") as Gonzorgo
Gideon (also from "Pinocchio") as Roderigo
Since Huey, Dewey, and Louie are the only kids in the cast, this version allows them, as Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, to look for the sheep for Little Bo Peep. So, Daisy, who plays Bo Peep, has a minor role as does Donald, who plays Jack Be Nimble. The two stay behind in case the kids come back from the Forest of No Return. However, Goofy, who plays Simple Simon, joins Tom and Mary, a.k.a. Mickey and Minnie on the search for the kids and from there, help out in the toy factory in Toyland. (Well, Goofy is my favorite classic Disney character. How could I not include him in this remake at all?)

Getting Ready for Mickey's Birthday! ...Or Not?

Tokyo Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland toted 2008 as the year of the mouse, rather than the rat, in honor of Mickey Mouse, of course.

This seems fitting because this is the year Mickey (and Minnie) turn 80! However, I'm not sure if Disney's doing anything special for the occasion. So, I wrote to Jeff Pepper, moderator of 2719 HYPERION, asking if Disney even cares about the characters' birthdays nowadays. Here's the response. (Yes, my real name is Marci Cameron, so, don't go accusing me of lying just because I'm called Acme Girl on the blog.) According to the response, Disney might not be doing anything special for Mickey's 80th. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel for it seems Disney is allowing merchandise to celebrate the event.

The first to appear is from PEZ Candy which commemorates the occasion with a three-PEZ set in a collectible tin. (Link from Cartoon Brew.) Strangely enough, PEZ is celebrating its 80th anniversary, too, which makes the set even more special for PEZ lovers.

Next came the Disney Dollars. Disney Dollars, in case you didn't know, are special currency used at the Disney theme parks here in the U.S. This year, the Disney Dollars showcase Mickey for his 80th. (Link courtesy of DisneyDollars.net.) Wow! Looks like Disney is doing something for Mickey's 80th after all. Although, it is a minor detail, but hey, I'm not complaining.

And Disney's not done contributing the merchandise themselves, even their online store has items celebrating the mouse's big moment. Among them, the creme del la creme of Mickey's 80th anniversary themed merchandise, this appealing snowglobe which features Mickey in his most famous roles: "Steamboat Willie", "The Brave Little Tailor", "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", "Mickey's Christmas Carol", "The Prince and the Pauper", and "Runaway Brain". What a lineup!

So, with all this merchandise around, what about the Disney theme parks? Will they hold a big celebration for Mickey and Minnie's birthday this year? I'm not sure, but I'll be at Walt Disney World during that moment, namely, November 18th, the day "Steamboat Willie" premiered, so, I will celebrate the occasion nonetheless.Be patient, Mickey. Just a whole month more.

UPDATE 12/2/08: I was in WDW for Mickey's (and Minnie's) big day and I had noticed at their pin stations that they had pins marking the occasion. I got a pin with Mickey from his first appearance standing in front of the number 80 since that's how old he is. There are others, but I don't know how to describe them all. And although it seemed very low key, at least Disney did do something for the birthday of the mouse that started it all.

A "Treasure" to Treasure

Jeff Pepper recently posted on his blog, 2719 Hyperion, about what he wants a future wave of "Walt Disney Treasures" to be. I posted a comment of said post my idea, but here it is in full detail. You see, what I want in the "Walt Disney Treasures" line is... The Complete Goofy Volume Two!

The reason is because I feel there is more "Goofy" cartoons out there than what we have in the first volume. Here's the list of cartoons as follows in chronological order:

"How to Ride a Horse" (released June 20, 1941)
Originally a segment from "The Reluctant Dragon", it was rereleased as a stand-alone short February 24, 1950. It's on DVD right now on "Extreme Adventure Fun", but having it as a part of "Treasures" line would truly be memorable.

"El Gaucho Goofy" (released August 24, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; February 6, 1943 in the U.S.)
This segment from "Saludos Amigos" is more of a bonus feature than an actual cartoon just as "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from 1940's "Fantasia" and "Mickey and the Beanstalk" from 1942's "Fun and Fancy Free" were on "Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume 2". That fact aside, this segment's inclusion in the "Treasures" line would mean they wouldn't have to edit out Goofy smoking on a cigarette in the beginning of the segment like they did in the "Classic Caballeros" collection.

"The Goofy Success Story" (aired December 7, 1955)
An episode from "Walt Disney Presents Disneyland", but reaired in color. My preference is the color version, but they should keep Walt Disney's original intro to this episode. Although it's already on DVD as a bonus feature to "A Goofy Movie", having it as a main program on a "Treasures" set would make it even more collectible. In case you can't tell by the title, this episode "chronicles" Goofy's climb up the ladder of success with new animation wrap-around complimenting the cartoons reused here: "Moving Day" with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, "How to Ride a Horse" (already mentioned above), and "Motor Mania" (from the first volume of "The Compete Goofy").

"Goofy's Cavalcade of Sports" (aired October 17, 1956)
Again, this episode from "Disneyland", reaired in color, would have Walt Disney's original intro (if any) and the rest of the episode in color. In case you don't remember this episode or never seen it, this Olympic-themed episode, hosted by a bald, but jolly greek man (dressed in a toga with a wreath on his head), showcases Goofy's athletic skills through his classic sports cartoons. Another episode with new animation as a wrap-around for the cartoons.

"The Goofy Adventure Story" (aired March 20, 1957)
This episode, too, would have Walt Disney's original intro (if it exsists) and the rest of the episode in color. The title is deceiving because Goofy explains to his then-red-haired son about the Goofy Family Tree with the help of his classic cartoons wrapped-around by (you guessed it) new animation.

Another bonus feature on disc one, other than the aforementioned "El Gaucho Goofy", is the music video to "You Can Always Be Number One" from the 1983 album "Mickey Mouse Splashdance". This song is considered to be the anthem for "Sport Goofy" as the Goof is called whenever he plays a major sport. So, fittingly enough, the music video has clips from Goofy's sports cartoons. The album is available on Amazon in CD form and on iTunes where you can download the whole album or the individual songs.

It's here that disc one would be all filled up and it's time to pop in disc two. To continue, keeping in chronological order:

"Freewayphobia or the Art of Driving the Super Highway" (released February 13, 1965)
This cartoon was excluded from the first volume of "The Complete Goofy", but Leonard Maltin, who hosts the "Treasures" line, makes mention of this cartoon. However, I would like to own it on DVD and the "Treasures" line seems like the perfect home for it. It's an educational cartoon explaining the three kinds of drivers on the freeway. In the meantime, you can watch the cartoon on YouTube: Part 1 and Part 2. (Courtesy of JamieInnesNZ.)

"Goofy's Freeway Troubles" (released September 22, 1965)
Commonly known by fans as "Freewayphobia #2", this cartoon was also excluded, but mentioned by Leonard Maltin. Another cartoon I would like to see on DVD, especially in the "Treasures" line. Another educational cartoon, however, this time, focusing on one driver (played by Goofy, of course) and how to deal with car problems and emergencies on the freeway. Another cartoon to watch on YouTube: Part 1 and Part 2. (Also from JamieInnesNZ.)

"Sport Goofy in Soccermania" (aired May 27, 1986)
Yet another cartoon that should have been on DVD, but isn't. Not in the states at least. Could be a pilot for DuckTales since it's set in Duckburg and includes Scrooge McDuck, the Beagle Boys, and Donald's nephews - Huey, Dewey, and Louie, but this cartoon focuses on the game of soccer (as indicated by the title) and features Goofy as the boys' soccer coach. (The nephews', not the Beagle Boys'.)

And finally, I've saved the best for last. Drum roll, please. The last main cartoon on disc two is...

"How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" (released December 21, 2007)
Shown in front of "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" instead of "Enchanted" as we had hoped, this is one of those cartoons that's just too good not to be on DVD. You can, however, purchase it on iTunes through here.

The bonus features on disc two would be separate interviews with two of the people who voiced current Goofy projects with Bill Farmer, the current voice of Goofy. The first interview would be with April Winchell, daughter of the late Paul Winchell. April not only voiced Peg on "Goof Troop", but also Clarabelle Cow on "House of Mouse", "Mickey, Donald, and Goofy: The Three Musketeers", and, most recently, "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse". The second and last interview would be with Jason Marsden who voices Goofy's son, Max, since "A Goofy Movie". Having interviews with these two voices on their experience working on these Goofy projects would make this all the more special.

Of course, this is just my opinion on what I would like to see on a "Treasures" set. What do you think? Should there be a volume two to "The Complete Goofy"? UPDATE 11/01/10: Disney has finally released "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater" on DVD in Volume 1 of their "have a laugh!" series. Check out Ultimate Disney's review here. It still would be cool to get the cartoon on a Walt Disney Treasures set though.

A Fun Online Game

What a Wabbit!

We interrupt my Disney mood for the following post:

My favorite toons have always been Warner Bros.' Looney Tunes with their unique brand of humor. And the most popular of the LTs is none other than that "wascally wabbit" himself, Bugs Bunny!
On this day in 1940, Bugs lit up the screen in the classic Tex Avery short "A Wild Hare". And from that moment on, the wabbit has been entertaining audiences the world over. No wonder TV Guide named him the number one greatest cartoon character of all time! (Sorry, Mickey, you only made it to number nineteen.)

The wabbit even got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! And that's the highest honor any movie actor can receive! (Pic from the wabbit's Wikipedia page.)

The best way I can celebrate the wabbit's b-day is to share with these fan-made music videos of Bugs' rap song from the "Space Jam" soundtrack, "Buggin'": this version uses classic cartoon clips (courtesy of Forman7) while the other has clips from "Space Jam" (courtesy of LURK).

Bugs shares his birthday with another important figure in my life: my mother! (Although, she was born a couple of decades after Bugs.) So, to any of her co-workers out there who might be reading this blog, be sure to E-Mail her a birthday greeting today, would ya? It would really make her day.

Another Year Faster

Today, I break from Disney and, keeping with the birthday theme from my previous posts (namely, Goofy and Donald), celebrate the 17th birthday of Sonic the Hedgehog!

(Yes, I like other characters besides Disney in case you couldn't tell by the links on the right side of my blog.) I don't have anything prepared for him this year, but I did write a fanfic for his and Eggman's birthday on Fanfiction.net. (Dr. Eggman debuted the same day as Sonic, ya know.) If you still need a "Sonic" fix for his birthday today, Sonic Stadium had gotten the online "Sonic" community together and did a tribute to him for his 15th in 2006 called "The Summer of Sonic". And it looks like they're doing it again this year. Check the out the main site here.

On a related note (or should I say, belated), Garfield celebrated his 30th birthday on the 19th of this month! I didn't notice until I read the comics the day after. Sorry for the delay, Garfield, I guess I forgot. And for those of you who don't believe me (that is, if you've never even heard of Garfield, and why shouldn't you?), here's the comic strip to prove it (from Garfield's official web site):

The Disney Duck Gets His Day

Donald Duck fans, rejoice! Today marks his 74th birthday!

Although this comes close to my previous post celebrating Goofy's 76th birthday, Donald needs this moment so that he doesn't feel left out. So, as I did with Goofy's birthday post, I'll provide some links of Donald at his best.

A "Mousey" Animator

Merchandise to the "Max"?

There's a thread over at the WDWMagic Board asking about merchandise featuring Goofy's son, Max. Max, of course, is one of my favorite Disney characters, second only to his dad, Goofy. However, from what I've read on the thread mentioned, there's no Max merchandise at the American Disney Parks. But you can get pins of him, but those are pretty rare. Oh, well. At least, I got his autograph at the Toontown Fair back in 2002 on my first ever visit to Walt Disney World. Maybe, when I go to Disneyland or WDW this Fall, I'll take photos of him. ...if I can find him.

Happy Birthday, Animal Kingdom!

And it's also the 10th anniversary of Disney's Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World in Florida, a theme park featuring real live animals! (Strange coincidence, huh?) So, what does this have to do with my blog, "Toons 'n' Tunes"? Well, Disney is the studio that brought us Mickey Mouse and he and his gang are animals, so, it's only fitting that I mention this soon-to-be milestone. Unfortunately, I'm not in Animal Kingdom (or even WDW) for the festivities, but it's a note worthy celebration, so, I'll just watch the opening ceremony at the Laughing Place and listen to Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade on my iPod. (Man, I miss Expedition Everest.)

Oh, and before I forget, just so you know, "Today in Disney History" posted about Animal Kingdom, sort of a mini tribute if you will.

Giselle Gets Goofy (or "Goofy Gets Enchanted")

Over at the Disney Dreams Forum, there's a discussion about character pairings that are unlikely, otherwise known as non-canon couples. That's got me thinking about two characters I'd like to see as a couple even if it is non-canon. The reason I'm discussing it here, other than just posting my opinion, is because I'm not a member of the Disney Dreams Forum.

"Gawrsh! She shore is purdy!"

Well, Goofy, looks alone is not the reason I think you two should be together.

Perhaps, I should explain why I choose Giselle for Goofy. When "Enchanted" was in theaters, I got hooked on Giselle for her innocence and charm, not to mention her bubbly personality. These were the same qualities that Goofy has, thus, making them the perfect couple. (I didn't even watch the movie until I got the DVD. LOL)

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Doesn't Goofy already have a girlfriend? What about Clarabelle Cow?" While I'm well aware that Disney has paired Goofy with Clarabelle in recent years, most notably in "Mickey, Donald, and Goofy: The Three Musketeers", Clarabelle was Horace Horsecollar's girl first, long before Goofy came along. And I don't want to put poor Goofy in a love triangle situation, so, Clarabelle can stay with Horace. Oh, and don't think I've forgotten about Sylvia Marpole, Goofy's love interest from "An Extremely Goofy Movie". Well, I haven't seen her outside of that movie, so, I'm guessing it didn't work out between her and Goofy. Long story short, Goofy needs a steady girlfriend and I've found the perfect one in Giselle.

Now, in order to make this work, the plot of "Enchanted" must be slightly changed for Goofy and Giselle to end up with each other. (The majority of this blog from this point on contains slight spoilers for the original movie, so, if you haven't seen the movie and don't want the ending spoiled, I suggest going over to Cartoon Brew and reading what Jerry Beck is up to.) For starters, Goofy takes the place of Robert, who is grounded to reality. However, Goofy is not like that by nature, so, those characteristics go to... Who else? ...his son, Max. You see, Max is naturally the most mature of the Disney characters, so, I figure when he's in the real world, he would follow its rules without question. Getting Max to believe in fairy tales, like he did when he was a child, might be one challenge not even Goofy would overcome. Once Giselle comes along however, she could convince him that it's okay to let loose and believe in "Happily ever after". (Just so you know, I'm adding Roxanne to the plot so that Max, too, can have a "Happily ever after" by movie's end.)

Now, I know that Robert has a fiancé, Nancy, but she doesn't seem right for Goofy. So, Nancy's role is minor by making her the organizer of the ball at the movie's climax. This keeps Goofy single until he meets Giselle and Prince Edward could still end up with Nancy.

One of these days, I'll get to writing my version of "Enchanted" and adding it to my Fanfiction.net site. But at least, now, you know why I think Goofy and Giselle are perfect for each other. Do you feel the same way?

Ollie Johnston, the last of Disney's "Nine Old Men", as they're called, has gone to join the other eight in the big Animation Studio in the sky. I noticed the news of his death being scrawled on Northwest Cable News. He passed away Monday night, April 14, 2008. His most notable credits include "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", "Pinocchio", "Fantasia", "Bambi","Cinderella", and "Sleeping Beauty". He will truly be missed among the classic Disney animation fans.

The Shout Heard 'Round the World

I'm sure you all know about the infamous "Goofy Holler", right? You know, the one that goes: "Yah-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!" Well, I happen to come across a blog entry that compiles almost all of the Disney cartoons and movies that use the holler including the one that started it all, 1941's "The Art of Skiing". You'll find it here. There are some the author, Michael J. Ruocco, admits he forgot to mention, but I forgive him: I don't know all the clips that use the "Goofy Holler" myself. But I do know a few that are missing. The ones I remember that weren't mentioned are as follows:

1. There was another in 1949's "Goofy Gymnastics" that Mr. Ruocco somehow missed: The original version of the holler as heard in "The Art of Skiing" is used as Goofy is flung through the roof from the rings on his ceiling and falls back down.

2. Another cartoon that uses the holler from "The Art of Skiing" is 1983's "Mickey's Christmas Carol" as Goofy, portraying the ghost of Jacob Marley, falls down the stairs.

3. In the main title of "A Goofy Movie", the holler from "The Art of Skiing" helps illustrate the word "Goofy" falling and landing in between "A" and "Movie".

4. In Goofy's newest cartoon, "How to Hook Up Your Home Theater", the classic holler is used as Goofy is flung out of his house as a result of him pushing the red button on his universal remote to turn on his home theater system. Although I wonder why they didn't have Bill Farmer record the holler, hearing the original holler is a nice homage, wouldn't you agree?

Most of the hollers from this point on have been newly recorded by Bill Farmer, the current voice of Goofy. For instance:

5, 6, & 7.There's a newly recorded version in "A Goofy Movie" where Goofy and his son, Max, ride the roller coaster at an amusement park. (Goofy gets sick after that. LOL) Another newly recorded version is heard near the end right after the car explodes and sends Goofy flying, falling though the roof of Roxanne's front porch. We're not done with "A Goofy Movie" yet: the holler is heard at the end of the end credits just before they show the "Walt Disney Pictures" castle again.

8. In "Mickey, Donald, and Goofy: The Three Musketeers", Goofy lets out the holler as he falls from the crumbling stone bridge in chains. (Goofy's in the chains, not the bridge.)

9 & 10. Remember when I mentioned the short from "Disney's House of Mouse", "How to Be a Rock Star", in my post devoted to Goofy's musical talent? In the cartoon, Goofy tries to get discovered by an executive of a record company by swinging on a rope outside the window. Suddenly, the rope breaks and, yep, you guessed it, Goofy falls. Cue holler. But the hilarity doesn't stop there: The exec. heard the holler and signs Goofy up right away. And the Goof's first single? Why, a song featuring his holler, of course! (LOL)

11 & 12. In the "Mickey Mouse Works" cartoon "How to Be a Waiter" (or is it "How to Be a Movie Star"?), Goofy practices his lasso skills while filming a scene from a western movie and flies off as he lassos with his hand and feet. He soon gets tangled up in the rope and lets out the holler, and repeatedly, I might add, as the rope pulls him up and down like a yo-yo. In that same cartoon, during the Sci-Fi scene, Goofy lets out the holler after being flung into deep space.

13, 14, & 15. In the "Once Upon a Christmas" segment "Have Yourself a Very Goofy Christmas", the holler doesn't take a holiday. Goofy lets it out when he swings from the torn banner into the Lumberjack Lingerie store. He shouts out again as he is catapulted from the Christmas tree out through the roof of the mall. Later on, after Pete covers Goofy's house with snow, Goofy looks for the chimney and unwittingly falls down the hidden chimney, letting out the holler once more.

16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, & 22. There are many times the holler is used in the Playhouse Disney series "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" like in the episode "Goofy's Bird" as Goofy imagines jumping off the cliff using a pogo stick (but falling), in "Mickey's Handy Helpers" where Goofy is flung from one of the springs of the Handy Dandy Machine which makes the Handy Helpers work, and in "Mickey's Big Band Concert" as Goofy is flown out of his trombone horn via a bicycle pump. There was one episode of "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" that used the "Goofy Holler" quite a bit. In "Goofy in Training", Mickey greets us, but gets interrupted by the holler and goes and finds Goofy hanging on a branch of a tree. The second holler occurs when Goofy loses control as he practices skiing by using roller skates. The third is when he skis for real off the ski jump at the end of the ski slope. The final holler in this episode happens as Goofy falls off the cookies he climbed over in Willie the Giant's picnic.

Goofy's not the only one who does the holler. Here are some recent examples of other characters letting it out:

23. Following the scene where Goofy falls from the bridge in "Mickey, Donald, and Goofy: The Three Musketeers", Clarabelle Cow (voiced by April Winchell) does her own version of the holler ("Moo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!") as she jumps down to save him.

24. Goofy's son, Max (voiced by Jason Marsden), actually quotes his dad on the holler when he's taken on a joyride by a car with a mind of its own in the "House of Mouse" episode "Max's New Car". Like father, like son. ("I wish you wouldn't say that.")

25. The more recent use of the "Goofy Holler" can be found in the movie "Enchanted" as the troll is flung from the tree after Giselle and Pip jump off the same branch as the troll which prompts the troll (voiced by Fred Tatasciore) to do the holler.

There are a few more uses of the "Goofy Holler" in the "Mickey Mouse Works" cartoons and in some episodes of "House of Mouse", but I don't know which ones. Nevertheless, the "Goofy Holler" will remain, in cartoon history, as the most used vocal effect when falling down. ...and down and down. Yah-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!

"A Goofy Movie": Thirteenth Anniversary

On this day in 1995, Goofy's first full-length solo movie premiered in theaters. It was titled, appropriately enough, "A Goofy Movie". This movie also features and revolves around Goofy's son, Max. Although he made his debut in "Goof Troop" in 1992, it was this movie that made me love Max as much as his dad, Goofy.
The reason remember this date is because I happen to see it as I changed the day on my Disney daily calender that I got for Christmas last year. Even so, I honestly liked this movie a lot ever since I first watched it at my cousins' house in Minnesota about a decade ago. This is a fun movie, not only introducing us to Max's love interest, Roxanne, but showing us the bond between father and son.

I like how the movie shows just how much Max truly loves Roxanne, even going so far as to lie to her to keep her from seeing someone else. And when he tells the truth by movie's end, not only is she very understanding, but she also explains she liked him all along from the moment he first "Ahyucked".

However, it's Goofy and Max's relationship that really makes this movie truly memorable. Best proof of this can be found in their duet, "Nobody Else But You". Truly heartwarming.

I think this movie is definitely worth the watch. And I'm not just talking about the songs, either, although this site is called "Toons 'n' Tunes" and they are fun songs, too. You can find this on DVD as part of Disney's defunct "Gold Collection", but it's in fullscreen, so, until they re-release it the widescreen format, we'll have to settle for the fullscreen version for now. As for the soundtrack, which features the songs and score from the film, it's out of print, but you can get it at Amazon.com or find MP3s of the songs online somewhere. Even so, Goofy's first solo movie is the best yet.
UPDATE 11/01/10: I may have missed the fifteenth anniversary of the movie, but someone else didn't. Animation World Network did a great article about a live action version of the song "After Today" from "A Goofy Movie". Check it out here through YouTube. (As directed by Ted Sowards.) House of Mouse at Disney Parks?

I'm a fan of "Disney's House of Mouse" since it first aired on ABC on January 13th in 2001. Unfortunately, seeing new episodes of "Power Rangers" and "Pokémon" kept me from watching this show as much as I would have liked. Now that I'm on my Disney kick, I'm watching the show every morning on Toon Disney. Well, the episodes I really like. I'm recording my favorite episodes on DVD since I don't know when Disney is gonna release the series on DVD. Sure, the "House of Mouse" movies are okay ("Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse" and "Mickey's House of Villains"), but I would like to see the full series released on DVD, wouldn't you?

Whilst on the subject of "House of Mouse", I've been thinking that it should be among the Character Dining experience at the Disney Parks. Character Dining, in case you didn't know, is where you dine while the characters meet with you at your table. There are a select few restaurants in the parks that have Character Dining and I would like to see the "House of Mouse" added to that list. It would be really cool to see the costumed characters (Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and Goofy... and maybe Goofy's son, Max) in their animated counterparts' "House of Mouse" attire. And it's always fun to watch cartoons while you eat, but this time, in a public restaurant. How cool is that? I was originally thinking it could be in Disney's Hollywood Studios (the park formally known as Disney-MGM Studios), but I don't see why it couldn't also be in Disney's California Adventure. Both those parks seem like the perfect settings for their respective "House of Mouse". Even though the show sometimes states at the beginning that the "House of Mouse" is located on Main Street or in Toontown, I think Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's California Adventure seem more appropriate, don't you?

So, to whoever's in charge of Disney now, I hope you're reading this because this is one Disney Dream I would like to see come true sometime this century. Who else here agrees with me? Leave a comment, why don'cha?

UPDATE 2/19/09: Oh, snap! No more Toon Disney! They replaced the channel with Disney XD on February 13, 2009! That means I won't be able to watch "House of Mouse" until Disney decides to put the series on DVD. So, come on, Disney, do it already, I'm not getting any younger!

Goofy Over Goofy

Gawrsh! I've been on a Disney kick since my trip to Walt Disney World last October and it's still going strong! I guess now is as good a time as any to blog about my favorite Disney character: Goofy!
Why choose him? He makes me laugh. Ahyuck! That's the simple answer. The long answer is because I missed his 75th birthday, so, I'm making it up to him before his 76th comes up this May 25th. Another reason I like Goofy so much is because he's so gawrsh darn talented! Sure, he's a great athlete (I loved seeing all those "How To" shorts), but since this blog is called "Toons 'n' Tunes", you know I'm talking about his musical abilities.

Starting with the 1935 Mickey Mouse cartoon "The Band Concert", Goofy is among the band members playing the clarinet which leads to a cute, but cartoony duet with Clarabelle Cow: The end of her flute is in the bell of his clarinet, yet, they still play beautiful music through their instruments flawlessly. Ah, the things you can do in cartoons. There was a Goofy-like character in the cartoon playing the trombone, but his fur was too bushy for me to consider him as Goofy, too. The next cartoon worth mentioning is 1937's "Mickey's Amateurs". Here, Mickey hosts an amateur hour and among the acts is Goofy and his fifty-piece one-man-band! Among the instruments he plays are cymbals (the top end he strapped on his butt), an accordion (which he put between his legs), a trumpet, a xylophone, a trombone, a flute, a tuba (my favorite instrument!), a clarinet, a banjo, and a harmonica. He plays some other instruments, but these are the most prominent. His first song, "In The Good Ol' Summertime", goes smoothly, but when he tries to pull the lever to a faster level which ends up getting pulled out of the machine, he's forced to play "A Hot Time In The Ol' Town Tonight" at an uncontrollably fast pace until the machine breaks, literally! "Ahyuck! It busted," he says, shrugging off the disaster that he endured. What a good sport. (Screenshot from the Encyclopedia of Disney Shorts.)

Another cartoon worth mentioning is 1942's "Symphony Hour" where Goofy plays a bassoon (or is that a contrabassoon?) in an orchestra conducted by Mickey Mouse, of course. After rehearsals, the gang gets ready for the concert, but Goofy, carrying all the instruments, misses the elevator and falls down the shaft. (Yah-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooey!) While he tries to pull his hat off over his face, he, by some miracle, gets out of the way of the incoming elevator, but the instruments don't. So, the gang tries to manage the concert on the flattened instruments with hilarious results! (Screenshot by me from "Walt Disney Treasures: Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume Two" on DVD. Goofy made a cameo in 1952's "Pluto's Christmas Tree", playing the double bass (or bass fiddle as he might call it) and singing "Deck The Halls" with Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck outside of Mickey's house for Mickey, Pluto, Chip, and Dale. (Screenshot from the Encyclopedia of Disney Shorts.)

By the time the "Mickey Mouse Club" first aired on television screens nationwide in 1955, its intro would show Goofy back in the one-man-band habit, but this time, a bit more simplistic. A bass drum on his back has cymbals on top which clang as he marched. The same can be said for the drumstick tied to his foot by a piece of string so that it can bang the drum. Meanwhile, Goofy himself plays the following instruments in order, but not simultaneously: trombone, flute, tenor saxophone, and trumpet. The MMC intro would become edited in later episodes, removing Goofy's one-man-band performance. A shame, really. I apologize for not having screenshots since no one's taken them yet (including me), but you can see the full, extended intro (and in color, no less!) here. (Credit to kaijueguy for the vid.)

By the time Goofy got his own TV series in 1992, "Goof Troop", he again displays his musical talent, much to the embarrassment of his son, Max, who was a kid at the time. In the episode, "Shake, Rattle and Goof", Goofy wants to join Max and Pete's son, PJ, in their rock band by playing his ukulele. A ukulele in a rock band? No wonder Max is embarrassed! A few more notables come from the 2001 TV series, "Disney's House of Mouse", currently on Toon Disney. I apologize for the lack of screenshots for this, so, you'll just have to use your imagination. In the first cartoon, "How to Be Groovy, Cool and Fly", Goofy is dressed up as one of the Beatles (or in this case, "The Goofies") and is standing behind, of all things, a drum set. He even plays them well. Who knew Goofy got rhythm? Further on in the cartoon, Goofy's dressed as a punk rocker, sporting a wild green hairdo and of course, an electric guitar which he plays. And the right music, no doubt. See for yourself here. (Courtesy of trollheimer.) The second cartoon from "House of Mouse", "How to Be a Rock Star", revolves around rock music as Goofy attempts to become, what else, a rock star! (Personally, I would've preferred him as a country music star due to his accent.) Here, near the beginning of the cartoon, he demonstrates the various musical styles he can play other than rock: Hawaiian (he plays the ukulele), Swiss (he plays the accordion again, but this time, with his hands, not his legs), and classical, which he plays on a toy piano instead of a real one. Look here and see. (Also from trollheimer.) Outside of the cartoons, the wraparound segments show him playing the ukulele quite a bit. The first notable was when he, Mickey, and Donald pose as the Quackstreet Boys (Huey, Dewey, and Louie) when Donald's nephews briefly broke up. Another instance was when Professor Ludwig Von Drake's touch screens replaced Goofy in his waitering duties, so, he decides to help his friends with their jobs, including the Quackstreet Boys, where he jams with them on his ukulele.

The most recent musical venture comes in the current TV series, "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" on Playhouse Disney. Sure, it's a preschool series, but hey, I like it even though I'm an adult. Since this episode is fairly new, I won't give too much away, just Goofy's part. In the episode, "Mickey's Big Band Concert", Mickey and his friends form a band to play polka music in Mickey Park's big "Polka Palooza". Goofy is the trombonist of the band ("Come on, Tromboney, it's time to play."), but his trombone slide is stuck. Of course, one thing leads to another, so, although he gets the slide unstuck, he gets his butt stuck in the trombone's horn. All it takes is a bicycle pump to blow air into the trombone to get Goofy out. ("I'm so glad that ended on a happy note!") You'll have to see the rest of the episode to see Mickey's band play at the "Polka Palooza".

However, he's more than just a musician. He's a dancer, too. But since Goofy is goofy, he needed to learn how to dance in his 1953 cartoon titled, appropriately enough, "How to Dance". He learns various dances along the way. I can only remember him doing an Irish jig and maybe a little ballet. But as soon as he gets the chance to actually dance, he quickly gets smothered by couples dancing to a fun dixieland song provided by The Firehouse 5 + 2 in an animated cameo. He suddenly lost his two-left-feet by the time he starred in 2000's "An Extremely Goofy Movie" where he does some disco-dancing with Sylvia Marpole, the collage librarian he falls in love with. You can view that momentous scene here. (Credit to Givijoarna for the clip.)

Another moment where his dancing is center stage is the "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" episode, "Fancy Dancin' Goofy". In this episode, he gets ready for the "Fancy Dance" at the clubhouse by wearing a purple-polka-dotted tie ("I'm in style.") and learning how to fancy dance from Donald to impress Clarabelle Cow who agrees to go with him to the "Fancy Dance". Goofy even got her a daffodil to go with her yellow dress. Even in a preschool series, Goofy shows his romantic side.

Of course, we can't forget all the times Goofy sings, especially when he sings his trademark song, "The World Owes Me A Livin'", which first came from the 1934 Silly Symphony "The Grasshopper and the Ants" and was co-written by Goofy's first voice actor (and the Grasshopper's, too), Pinto Colvig. Goofy's current voice actor, Bill Farmer, is a pretty good singer, too. (And the main reason why I'm hooked on Goofy.) Proof of this can be found in "A Goofy Movie" - which he sings two songs with his son, Max, who is a teenager by now ("On The Open Road" and "Nobody Else But You") - and "Mickey, Donald, and Goofy: The Three Musketeers" - where he sings a romantic, but funny duet with Clarabelle Cow ("Chains Of Love"), voiced by April Winchell, daughter of the late Paul Winchell - as well as the aforementioned "House of Mouse" (especially the song, "Soup Or Salad, Fries Or Biscuits, Extra Olives, Donuts", a parody of the "Mary Poppins" song, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious") and "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" plus countless Disney children's music CDs such as "The Best of Children's Favorites: Mickey's Top 40" and "The Best of Children's Favorites: Pooh's Top 40".

His musical abilities don't end with the cartoons, his appearances in the theme parks allow him to dance along to the various bands the parks house. However, he gets into the act at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom during the SpectroMagic parade. (You know, the nighttime parade most people seem to miss.) On the music float of the parade, Genie, from "Disney's Aladdin", conducts a band of magical instruments like two double basses and a harp. Also in the band are Chip and Dale, both playing the piano, and, yep, you guessed it, Goofy! Here, he's the entire percussion section which includes the timpani and the xylophone. Gawrsh! Is he talented or what?

He also gets a chance to sing in "Kingdom Hearts II" with Sora and Donald during the Atlantica level. (Screenshot from Gamespot.) I don't have the game myself since I don't have a Playstation 2, but you can search for the video clips on YouTube.

Now, you can see why Goofy's my favorite Disney character. And not just because of his goof-ups (he is, after all, "Goofy"), but also because of his vast musical talent which never seems to cease. And I, for one, hope it never does. Keep the music playing, Goofy! Ahyuck!
UPDATE 5/12/08: Fanfiction.net author Jediempress added chapters to her "Kingdom Hearts" fanfic "Words are Power", two are most notable mostly because I suggested these words: "Goofy" and "Banjo". (I thought of "Banjo" because of seeing Goofy play the banjo in "Mickey's Amateurs".)
